The larynx, also
known as the voice box consists of the vocal cords. It is due
to the vibration of these vocal cords that speech is produced.
When cancer affects the vocal cords it causes a
change in the voice Even when the growth is one or two millimeters
it produces a change in the voice. If you have a hoarseness in
your voice whichdoes notimprove in 3 weeks, go to an ENT specialist
and have your throat examined. Other symptoms that may occur are
a sense of discomfort in the throat, a lump in the throat, coughing
or difficulty or pain in breathing or swallowing and earache.
Small cancers can be cured by laser surgery or radiation
and the voice can be restored to normal. Late cancers can also
be cured but with a permanent loss of voice. Most of those who
develop this type of cancer use or have used tobacco and many
are also heavy drinkers of alcohol.
