CANCER OF THE LARYNX
The larynx, also known as the voice box consists of the vocal cords. It is due to the vibration of these vocal cords that speech is produced.
When cancer affects the vocal cords it causes a change in the voice Even when the growth is one or two millimeters it produces a change in the voice. If you have a hoarseness in your voice whichdoes notimprove in 3 weeks, go to an ENT specialist and have your throat examined. Other symptoms that may occur are a sense of discomfort in the throat, a lump in the throat, coughing or difficulty or pain in breathing or swallowing and earache.
Small cancers can be cured by laser surgery or radiation and the voice can be restored to normal. Late cancers can also be cured but with a permanent loss of voice. Most of those who develop this type of cancer use or have used tobacco and many are also heavy drinkers of alcohol.
