Cancer of the Cervix
What is a pap test?
It is a simple painless test to indentify women who are at a risk for getting cancer of the cervix. The cervix is the mouth of the uterus.
Normally the surface of our body, like the skin, sheds cells. This is normal process of wear and tear. Similarly the surface of the cervix also sheds cells. These shed cells are collected by the doctor with a cotton swab.
The cells are then transferred onto a glass slide.
This glass slide is examined under a microscope. The appearance of these cells seen under the microscope is vastly different in cases of cancer and precancer and can be readily recognized. Precancer is one step before the development of cancer.
By means of the PAP test we can identify a woman in the precancerous stage and by efficiently treating this condition cancer can be avoided 100%.
